Standard Mental Health First Aid
Course Overview
The 12-hour Standard Mental Health First Aid course is for any adult interested in learning how to assist someone experiencing a mental health problem.
Spread over two days, participants learn practical and evidence-based skills for how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received.
Learn about the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
This face-to-face course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals and includes information on:
- Depression
- Anxiety problems
- Psychosis
- Substance use problems
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe effects of alcohol or other drug use
- Severe psychotic states
- Aggressive behaviours
COURSE OUTCOME
All students will receive a copy of the MHFA manual and be issued with a Certificate of Completion. Individuals may also wish to complete an online assessment to become an Accredited Mental Health First Aider, an accreditation which is valid for three years.
GROUP SIZE
This course requires a minimum of six participants. Whilst the recommended group size is 12-14 we can accommodate up to 25 participants. Face to face sessions do not have to be held on consecutive days.
Note – This is an education course designed to teach people the skills to give first aid to others, it is not a therapy or support group.
